Herbalist

Being a Chartered Herbalist means constantly and consistently being aware of the strength of the earth. The trees have a medicine as do the plants. It is important to gather them at the correct time, to offer them a gift before taking, and to listen to their voices as they tell you what histories are around them.

making a plantain cream

Plantain cream is one of the creams I make, I extract the energies from the fresh leaves. Here while it looks a bit green but prosperous it is so tremendous for those garden cuts, or camp out scratches. Chickweed tea, great for the skin, and for relieving water retention. Rhubarb root can add a red-blond tinge to the hair.

I only like teas that taste good, call me horrible so here is my Recipe for Chickweed tea:
Gather and dry the tops, stems, leaves and flowers, (not the root). Add some spearmint, (my favorite tea companion) and I use them half and half. Cover your dried tea mix with boiling water, I use about two teaspoons, you can judge the strength of things. Peppermint calms and soothes the digestive tract. Chickweed, can be used as a mild diuretic, and suggest this in the afternoon when you feel bloated. It is an old remedy for obesity and is mentioned in Culpeppers Herbs. If you are picking it yourself, which I often am, make sure you pick it in a pesticide free area. If you are pregnant, please, consult with your physician before using any herbal preparation.

As a herbalist we have to be aware of the effects and contra-indications of the herbs we use. It is important to be well trained. The Dominion Herbal College in Vancouver is a wonderful place to learn. Jethro Kloss (Back to Eden) and Dr. Earl Mindell (Herb Bible) are only two of its former students.

Frog Sprint offers interactive consultation. Things that are needed are a description of your problem, medications you are currently taking and if this is an ongoing issue. Also if other things have been happening that could be parallel. For example lip herpes, and eczema. Always consult with your Doctor. Do you have allergy's and if so to what. The first encounter should take about an hour while this information is gathered. Another meeting is planned, this time for about a half hour to an hour where we will discuss your problem, possible solutions, and give you a written assessment. Sometimes products are easily available in health food stores. At other times custom products may need to be created. Each consultation is $100.00. Custom made products will be created as close to cost as possible.

At university it was hard to manage our finances, at that time being a single student with three children, and there was a simultaneous need to provide quality nutrition. The nearby forest offered wonderful treats and a way to augment our diet with natural food from the earth. Throughout the year we offer herbal foraging walks. They will be posted usually on our front page. It is a chance to spend a few hours outdoors and gather some wonderful herbs and delicious plants to add to your dinner. Because we are a Native American family we also offer that part to these walks and wood best used for arrows, wound healing herbs and more can be explored and discussed.

Frog spirit also has a line of herbal products and if you are seeking a herb not sometimes available please contact us we may have it, or have an idea of its location.

The intense perfumes of the wild herbs as we trod them underfoot made us feel almost drunk.

A man is ethical only when life, as such, is sacred to him, that of plants and animals as that of his fellow men, and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in need of help.
- Albert Schweitzer
